Real World Engineer Gives Updates On Forthcoming Gabriel
Albums
In the May issue of Sound on Sound Magazine, there is a lengthy
interview with Real World Engineer Richard Chappell. In the interview,
Chappell talks about the recording of Peter Gabriel's Up album at
great length as well as references to Ovo and The Long Walk
Home soundtrack. The interview is an amazing read and highly
recommended, but what is most important about this article is the
confirmation of several forthcoming releases.
According to Chappell, he is preparing material for producer Stephen
Hague, who is working on the much talked about revamped version of Ovo,
with Gabriel singing all of the songs himself (as opposed to the current
version which has guest singers on several tracks). This new version of Ovo
is said to be released "later this year in the U.S. as a genuine
Gabriel solo record." In addition, Chappell mentions the release of
a remix album, featuring mixes by Trent Reznor and Tricky revisiting
tracks from Up which is reported to also be "in the shops
towards the end of the year." If you've picked up some of the
European CD singles from Up, you have already gotten a taste of
the Tricky and Reznor remixes, but it will be interesting to see what
else this set will include when released. Finally, Chappell discusses
the release of the tentatively titled I/O, a new studio project
which has been discussed at length all over the Internet since Gabriel
himself first disclosed the project late last year. According to
Chappell, the I/O project (or whatever it is finally called) will
be out "some time in 2004" and be primarily based upon the
same sessions as the Up album.

Gabriel
Announces "Official Bootlegs" From North American 2003 Tour
Peter Gabriel has formally announced that he will be offering soundboard
recordings from several stops on the North American 2003 Growing Up Tour
as part of the Encore
Series, a set of 15 concerts recorded on 30 CDs from almost
every night on the 2003 tour. These shows will be available for sale
individually or by the complete set as an Internet exclusive release. They
shows are pressed on aluminum CDs (not CD-Rs), and feature a
slipcase with the date of the show on the outer cardboard sleeve. Each
official bootleg will be available for sale approximately three weeks after the
performance.
The Music.com, who distributes the Encore Series, states on their
FAQ that talks are in the works to
offer selected recordings from nights on the first leg of Gabriel's
Growing Up Tour from 2002 which offered a very different set list.
Similar efforts have been done in the past with acts like Pearl Jam, who
have notoriously changed their set slightly each night. It will be
interesting to see how Gabriel breaks up the monotony of this leg of the
tour to entice fans to buy every volume in the set. Other artists
currently participating in the Encore Series include Duran Duran and The
Who.

Update On New Daryl Stuermer/John Calarco Projects
I recently caught up with Daryl
Stuermer's drummer, John Calarco. John reports that work on his own solo
album (which also features Daryl Stuermer) should be resuming shortly.
The delay has been that Daryl is up-grading
his studio and adding pro-tools. In any case, the project is reportedly
almost done, and July 1st is the goal to resume the remaining work on
the album. In the meantime, John went into the studio on his own and
came out with some finished material that he is quite pleased with.
More on this project and Daryl's forthcoming jazz album will follow when
available. Stay tuned!
