MR:
Well, I’m not sure if I knew that. If I did, I’d forgotten it. I’m
not sure. Who are Classic Rock?
WOG: They’re a small company based in
Europe
that has put out a number of these documentaries on DVD on bands like
Genesis, Pink Floyd, Supertramp and others. I think Pink Floyd’s
management is also exploring legal action.
MR: I kind of rings a bell now, but I’m not very up on it; I’m not
sure.
WOG: Tony Banks mentioned that Paul Carrack was briefly considered as a
possible replacement for Phil Collins. Although I know that he was not
auditioned, was it your suggestion to look at Paul?
MR: Well, every name came up. Who knows? I think it would have been quite
hard. The problem is that for somebody to sing Genesis, they need that
sort of crack in the voice that Phil had. I’m not sure that it went any
farther than that, really. I can’t remember.
WOG: I was always very impressed with how well Paul Young sang “I
Can’t Dance” when he was with The Mechanics on the
M6
Tour.
MR:
Oh yeah! Paul could have done it very well, actually, I must say.
WOG:
When Phil announced his departure from Genesis after the charity gig in
1993, was there an immediate decision to carry on with Genesis?
MR: Before it was official, we had sort of spoken about it through Tony
Smith (the band’s manager), so we knew he did not want to carry on.
We
initially thought that it was time to stop. I think each time that there
has been a big change that we’ve thought that way, but we decided to
carry on, because I enjoy writing with Tony, really. It was as simple as
that.
WOG: Reading back on some older interviews with various band members, it
seemed that there was some resentment in the way in which Steve Hackett
quit Genesis. Do you think that is a fair assessment?
MR: No, I think resentment is the wrong word. I think it was more like
surprise, really. I don’t know quite why he… Well, I do know why he
left, but it seemed a funny time to do it. I understand Pete’s leaving,
because it actually made a lot of sense. He had a different life. He had a
child and a family… He had just done The
Lamb which was a really big project. I can understand that one, but
Steve leaving was just… Honestly, he needn’t have done it.
The weird
thing was, that it wasn’t long after that when we started doing solo
albums ourselves. It seemed a sort of odd thing to do, really.
WOG: So, it was more the shock of his departure?
MR: We were mixing a live album (Seconds
Out) at the time, and Phil saw [Steve] on the street on the way
in, and he was like “I’ll see you later,” and he just never came in
again (laughs)! …There are no bad feelings at all, really.
WOG:
Phil Collins has recently been responding to fan postings on the forum
section of his official site. Do you ever log onto the Internet and check
out fan sites or comments in the forum of the official Genesis site?
MR:
Funnily enough, it’s strange that you asked that. The other day I
went on-line to have a look, and unless you’re a member, you can’t get
in, can you?
WOG:
You can actually read comments on the forum without being a member I
think, but you cannot post without signing-up. Phil has generally posted
his comments through Bill, the webmaster for the site.
MR:
I couldn’t get in to see it! Anyway, I did log in, and I shall get
around to it. I shall have a little fiddle… but I couldn’t get on it
the other day.
WOG: I’m sure that Bill can help set you up if you let him know.
MR: I will. Thank you.
WOG: I appreciate you taking the time to chat so close to the holidays.
MR: It was my pleasure! Happy holidays and happy new year to you and all
the fans out there!
